Print Obituary & Condolences

Ampellio "Pep" Dal Pra passed away peacefully in his home on February 13, 2018, at the age of 97. He was born December 21, 1920 in Rockford, Illinois to Maria Borgo and Marcello Dal Pra. Pep was a proud World War II veteran. He joined the US Navy in 1942, where he served overseas on the USS Bristol destroyer and the battleship USS New Jersey. He returned from the war and married Rose Zavagnin on October 27, 1945, who he was married to for 72 years. In 1945 Pep opened the One Stop Pacemaker supermarkets with his brother, Tony Dal Pra. They owned and operated five supermarkets until Pep retired at age 70.

Pep was a strong man of tremendous faith and great virtue. He knew God's Love and passed it on to all he knew. At a young age, he became an altar boy at St. Anthony's Church, where he remained a lifelong member. He served as an usher at St. Anthony's for over 42 years. His love for his church and his strong faith was an example to all. Pep was the oldest member of Mauh Nah Tee See Country Club, where he was an avid golfer for over 50 years. Pep joined the Knights of Columbus Council 470 in 1946 where he acted as a past faithful Navigator and a past Grand Knight. Pep was a member of the Venetian Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War and a member of The Senior Holy Name. Pep is survived by his three children, Paula Turner (late Phil Turner), Eugene Dal Pra and Jeannine Dal Pra; six grandchildren: Nick Dal Pra (Michelle), Amanda Cochran, Gina Dal Pra, Carolyn Cochran (Joshua Cohen), Mark Dal Pra and Jessica Dal Pra; his great granddaughter, Emilia Rose Cohen; and several nieces and nephews. Pep was predeceased by his parents, his wife Rose, sisters, brothers and sons-in-law, Phil Turner and Robert Cochran.
We are thankful to his Siena family, where he and Rose lived their last six years. Our hearts are filled with gratitude to Northern Illinois Hospice who helped him live his final days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Poor Clares of Rockford (2111 S. Main St. Rockford IL 61102), Saint Anthony of Padua Church (1010 Ferguson St. Rockford IL 61102), and Northern Illinois Hospice (4215 Newburg Rd. Rockford IL 61108)

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 20 at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 1010 Ferguson Street, Rockford, Illinois, with Mass immediately following. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
