Obituary

Leroy Greathouse, 90, of Sycamore, Illinois, died peacefully Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at home.
Born August 11, 1927, in Mount Carmel, Illinois, the son of Elmer Garfield and Ethel (Spond) Greathouse, Leroy served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946.
He married Margaret "Peg" Carrie Hilbert on August 25, 1949. In 1953, he and Peg moved to Sycamore where they would make their home and raise their family.
Leroy spent over 30 years working in the Sycamore school system, serving first as a high school math teacher and later as principal of Sycamore Junior High.
After retirement, Leroy enjoyed a second career as a real estate broker and was a frequent sight on the golf course, both in Sycamore and in Bradenton, Florida, where he and Peg wintered for over 25 years. Active in the community, Leroy was a 50-plus-year member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church, a Kiwanian, a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, and an all-around good guy.
He is survived by his dear wife of 68 years, Peg; daughters, Jan Loomer and Candy Smith of Sycamore; son, Brad (Katherine) Greathouse of Longmont, CO; grandchildren, Kiah (Michelle) Loomer, Kira (Mike) Tchang, Alex Smith, Kelsey and Zak Greathouse; great-grandchildren, Cole and Shea Loomer, Keaton, Kellan and Tessa Tchang; brothers, John Greathouse of Mattoon and Garfield (Sandy) Greathouse of Markleville, IN; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Connie Ann; in-laws, Candase and Harold Hilbert; son-in-law, Charles Smith; granddaughter, Kendall Smith; sisters, Almeta Garner and Miriam Gasmovic; and brother, James.
Visitation will be from 10 am to noon Saturday, December 30, 2017, at Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Ave., with the funeral service immediately following, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Dan Swinson and the Rev. Harlene Harden.
Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
