Obituary

In his last 60 years, Loren "Vance" Vancil became a Sycamore institution.
As a young man fresh out of the United States Navy, Vance set about his passion. Despite the presence of more than 20 gas station and automotive competitors, Vance set up shop on the corner of State and Sabin streets. Fittingly, his gas station and shop were across from the Amory.
He knew how to fight, and he knew how to win. He had old-time values - character, an unyielding work ethic, and principles. He was tough on the outside, soft on the inside.
Yet the old timers figured the young guy wouldn't last a year.
When Vance retired 50 years later, Vance's Automotive was the longest surviving sole proprietorship in DeKalb County. He was a master mechanic, an innovative and fearless businessman with an unusual sense of excellence. Most of all, he was a loving husband, and a wonderful, gracious father. He was fiercely loyal to his friends, children, and customers.
Vance died peacefully December 17, 2017.
He is survived by his wife, Joan (Koine); first wife, Jacqueline (Mabel) [Sycamore]; his children, Mark [Northbrook, IL], Tami (Templeton) [Oregon, IL], Susan [Fort Myers, FL], Michael Carlson [Janesville, WI], Jane (Tallitsch) [Sycamore], Lori (Oldenberg) [Oregon, IL], and Eric [Sycamore]; along with 18 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and his sister, Pat Stoffregen [Loves Park, IL]; and brother Larry Vancil [Sycamore].
Vance was born in Ava, Illinois, to Raymond Vancil and Elaine (Cluster). He attended DeKalb High School, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 serving five years, including service on a destroyer. He was preceded in death by his son Loren Leslie, and his parents.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 21, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Olson Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk Street in Sycamore. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project at WoundedWarriorProject.org.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at Olson Funeral Home.
All who had the pleasure of knowing Vance will miss him.

  16. Laurie Hoffman

My deepest condolences and love to Vance's family. I have had the pleasure of my family and Vance's family being part of one another's family for years. Vance has worked on many of my cars in the past, and I will always fondly remember when I was younger I would get lectured every single time I brought my car to Vance on how to "properly" take care of a car. And he would tell me if I didn't he would no longer work on my cars. It became a joke of ours, because he never turned me away. Rest in peace Vance up there with Jesus, and a fast car or two. Love and peace, Laurie

  17. Damon and Wendy Whitney

So sorry for your loss. Vance was an icon in our little town and to this day when we visit the corner of State and Sabin seems empty without him working under the blue and orange 76 sign. May he rest in peace and prayers sent to you all.
