Donna Rae Ekberg, 85, of Rockford, passed away on Friday, June 23, 2017, in OSF St. Anthony Hospital. She was born October 2, 1931, in Rockford; the only child of Raymond and Laura (Johnson) Burkitt. She had fond memories of growing up on a farm and attending the one-room Oak Grove School for 8 years where she met her future husband. Donna graduated from Byron High School in 1949. She married Alan Ekberg on April 11, 1953 in Calvary Lutheran Church where she was a member for over 60 years. Donna worked part time at Rockford Standard Furniture and the Rockford Postal Employees Credit Union but she was mostly a homemaker. She cared deeply for her family and friends and enjoyed having them come over for Sunday dinner. Donna and Alan enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada and Minnesota.
She is survived by her husband, Alan; daughter, Terri; son, Douglas; grandsons, Fred (Amy), Alan and Bryan (Lauren); great-granddaughters, twins Harley and Harper, and Adestin; sister-in-law, Joni Ekberg; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Doc R. and Mary J.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 2nd Ave., Rockford. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation will be from on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fred C. Olson Chapel. Memorials to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
