Martha Mary Smith, 88, of Sycamore, IL died on May 18, 2017. She was the daughter of Hugh H. and Inez M. (Clarke) Smith and was born January 27, 1929 in Stockton, CA.

When Martha Mary was 9 months old, the family moved to St. Augustine, FL. For the next 18 years they lived in Florida during the winter and in Illinois in the summer. After graduating from St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine, Martha Mary moved back to Sycamore and was employed by DeKalb County Government where she worked in the Circuit Clerks office until her retirement. Martha Mary enjoyed traveling and her favorite destinations were the Caribbean Islands and Hawaii.

She is survived by two sisters, Alilu Stott and Dorothy Wirth. She is remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews; Allen (Jessica) Stott, David Stott, Carol (Dan) Sibley, Ron (Sandy) Wirth, Mary (Jeff) Giessen, Kathy (Jeff) Sherman, Jim Wirth, David (Nancy) Wirth, Joe (BethAnn) Wirth, Jerry (Denise) Wirth and 20 great nieces and nephews; Paul and Mary Kate Sibley, Lauren and Gus Stott, Chris, Corey, and Casey Giessen, Jamie Lane, Nick, Arielle, and Caitlin Sherman, Adam Wirth, Christy Kabanek, Kyle and Karin Wirth, Joe and Lauren Wirth and Sophia, Mia and Eva Wirth. She also enjoyed her 9 great-great nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents and brothers-in-law, Marx Stott and Joe Wirth.

According to Martha Mary's wishes there will not be a visitation but her life will be celebrated at a funeral Mass at the Church of St. Mary, 244 Waterman St., Sycamore at 11:00am on Thursday, May 25, 2017 with Fr. Paul Lipinski officiating. Immediately following will be a luncheon at the Parish Activity Center for a time of sharing. Private burial will take place at Mayfield Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in Martha Mary's name.

    I have fond memories of Aunt Martha's letters. Her humor and gentle spirit always shone through. My sympathy goes out to her family on her passing.
