Bernice H. Read, 96, formerly of Rockford, died February 23, 2017 in Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline, IL. Born Jan. 4, 1921 in Schapville, IL, the daughter of John M. and Johanna M. (Studier) Schultz. She married Kermit J. Read on Jan 4, 1941 in Elizabeth, IL; he predeceased her on Sep. 29, 2006. She worked as a bank teller for Illinois National Bank from 1969 to 1981. Bernice was a member of Third Presbyterian Church where she was a part of the Women's Association and the Davis Circle, and taught Sunday School. She enjoyed reading, gardening and helping with her grandchildren as they grew up. They were her joy, as were her great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Chad Read (Kristin Nicole Zagurski) of Castle Rock, CO and Kelly (Kelly Michael) Noack of Rock Island, IL; great-grandchildren, Rylee Cerise, Avree Alan, Michael James, Anden Thomas, and Sophie Marie; former granddaugther-in-law, Stacee Johnson Read; sisters, Myrtle "Carol" Buda and Juliette Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her daughter Sandra in 1948; infant son Mark in 1956; son Alan Lee Read in 1987; beloved daughter-in-law Cerise (Read) Heitz in 2000; brothers, Albert Fiedler, Morris Schultz and Edward Schultz; two brothers in infancy; and sisters, Florence Matz, Martha Westaby, and Violet (Robert) Baumgartner.
Funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Third Presbyterian Church, 1221 Custer Ave. Rockford, IL 61103 with Rev. Stephen Bowie officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. in the church prior to the service. Private family burial. Memorials may be made to Third Presbyterian Church, or the Center of Sight and Hearing, 8038 MacIntosh Ln, Rockford, IL 61107.

    I just learned of her passing, she was a very sweet person, I spent several times in her Rockford home talking about relatives from Elizabeth and Galena area. Kermit and my dad were cousins. She will be missed, god bless.
