Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Kalivoda died the evening of January 25, 2017. Born February 7, 1923 in Lambertville, NJ to Willis and Mae (Moore) Leffever. A graduate of Dover High School (1940) and Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, Newark, NJ, (1944), Betty was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy Nurse Corps in January 1945. While stationed at the US Naval Hospital in St. Albans, Long Island, NY, she met her future husband, Fredrick Kalivoda, Lt (jg) USN. Betty and Fred were married on August 10, 1946, moving to Rockford in 1950 where Fred established his law practice. Betty volunteered at Rockford Memorial Hospital for 50+ years, where she served as Chairman of Volunteers and Volunteer Coordinator, as well as Second Vice-president of the Auxiliary Board. She also spent many years as a buyer for the RMH Gift Shop. Betty was an avid golfer with the Tuesday Niners through age 92. A long time bridge player, she enjoyed the camaraderie of the many friends she made through her various bridge groups. She was a voracious reader and worked diligently to complete the daily crossword puzzle. Her seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren brought her much joy.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathy (John) Heisel of Rockford, Paula (William) Furniss of San Jose, CA, and Sarah (David) Scheerens of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren John (Marina) Heisel of Brooklyn, NY, Scott (Aubrey Welbers) Heisel of Cleveland, OH, Katie (Daniel) Brown of Rockford, IL, Nathaniel (Aparna Dixit) Furniss of San Francisco, CA, Adrienne Furniss of San Jose, CA, and Andrew and Emma Scheerens of Tucson, AZ.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, February 4 at 1 pm at the University Club of Rockford.
The family prefers memorials to Severson Dells Foundation, 8786 Montague Road, Rockford, IL 61102.
Many thanks to the compassionate staff at Bickford House and the Adult Critical Care staff at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Our deepest sympathies on the loss of Betty. I met her many years ago through Law Wives. I didn't know Betty very well, saw her infrequently, but when I did it was always a pleasure. The last time I saw her she spoke about her grandchildren. She will be missed. Ben and Mary
