Barbara Annette (Rulis) Short, 77, of Rockford, died Monday, January 16, 2017 at Rosewood Care Center after a long illness. Barbara was born on August 19, 1939 in Rockford, the daughter of Alfons and Frances (Kosinski) Rulis, both life-long residents of Rockford. She attended Rockford Public Schools, graduating from East High School in 1958. She studied at St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing in Rockford and obtained further training at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago, IL. Barbara received her R. N. degree in 1960. She was married in 1962 to Virgil D. Short, M.D., living in Hawaii and later in Bloomington, IL. The couple divorced in 1975. Barb raised their only child, John Bryan Short, as a single mom; he passed away in 1992. Throughout her nursing career, Barbara served in a number of venues from hospital nursing to private care, working as a public health nurse at the Winnebago County Dept. of Public Health from 1993 to 2011. She was a courageous breast cancer survivor for many years.
She is survived by her brother, Alan (Alfreda) Rulis of Annandale, Virginia and many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family is especially thankful to her cousin Diane Owen who provided months of personal care and assistance, and to her colleague and friend, Suzanne Wang, R.N., NP, who assisted Barbara with many health needs.
Services will be held on Monday, January 23, 2017, 1:00 pm at Olson Funeral & Cremation Service, Ltd., Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 2nd Ave., Rockford, with Pastor Becky Erbe officiating. Visitation prior to the service from 12:00 to 12:45 pm. Entombment at Sunset Mausoleum in Machesney Park, IL.     I was so saddened to learn of Barb's passing. Barb and I became friend through a breasr cancer support group. I loved hearing stories of her life. She will truly be missed. Condolences to her family.
