Robert C. Nelson, 72, of Rockton, IL passed away on December 30, 2016. Robert was born in Escanaba, Michigan on May 13, 1944. He graduated from Hononegah High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry at Michigan Tech in Houghton Michigan and furthered his education with a master degree from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. Robert married Tricia Davey on August 13, 2011 on the Lorelei off Black Point, Lake Geneva Wisconsin. Robert co-founded Abbott Plastics in 1980 and took great pleasure in guiding the continual growth and success of the company. He greatly valued the contributions of all the employees. Robert had a love of architecture and a fascination with the Village of Rockton. He also was an avid car enthusiast and actively participated in the Sports Car Club of America as a racing team owner and driver. He enjoyed mentoring others, the fine arts, relished music, enjoyed theater, gardening and spending time with family and friends. He actively supported the Natural Land Institute and was a member of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Robert is survived by his wife, Tricia, stepson, Wyatt and sisters, Cheryl (Mac) McCampbell and Sharon Holaves. Predeceased by his wife of 31 years, Maryann Shellstrom and his parents, Charles and Josephine Nelson. Robert leaves behind a much loved extended family and circle of friends.
The visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on January 5, 2016 at Olson Funeral & Cremations Services, Ltd, Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 2nd Ave., Rockford, IL. The funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 6, 2016 at the Old Stone Church, 101 E. Union St., Rockton, IL. The burial will follow at the Rockton Township Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be sent to Fred C. Olson Chapel, for the establishment of a science scholarship in his honor with details to follow.
