Robert "Bob" L. Stegall, 95, of Rockford, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, in SwedishAmerican Hospital. He was born January 31, 1921, in Stockton, IL; the son of Clarence and Margaret (Reiland) Stegall. Bob attended St. Thomas High School in Rockford and began working at National Lock Company. He married Mildred A. Anderson on June 21, 1942, and was looking forward to celebrating their 75th Wedding Anniversary together in 2017. He served in the 1st Infantry Division "The Big Red One" of the U.S. Army in WWII. Wounded in action he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon his discharge from the Army he returned to work at National Lock Company until his retirement. Bob and Milly enjoyed working and attending events at the Ellida Lodge, camping and fishing in Wisconsin and the shores of the Kishwaukee River. He was a member of the Ellida Lodge and the American Legion. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. A lifelong Cubs fan, he never missed a game on television. He always hoped to live long enough to see the Cubs win the World Series. According to Bob, this was a great accomplishment for the Cubs and for him. He was a Green Bay Packer fan and was always seen wearing a Packer shirt, jacket or hat.
He is survived by his wife Mildred; daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Stegall; son, Larry (Ann) Stegall; grandchildren, Meredith (Cory Gehrke) Stegall and Ben Stegall (Joanna Beltran and her children, Irene and Louie Beltran); along with great-grandson, Jackson Gehrke.
Respecting his wishes there will be a private family service. A Celebration of Life will be held from 12 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016, at the Ellida Lodge Home Association Club, 1115 5th Ave. Rockford. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family.
