Obituary

Craig Morgan Dyer 1946-2016 passed away surrounded by loved ones at St. Mary's / Mayo Hospital in Rochester, MN after a sudden lung illness related to his kidney transplant in 2015. Craig was born December 1, 1946 in Rockford; the son of Verne and Gunhild (Carlson) Dyer. He was a 1964 graduate of Harlem High School and continued his collegiate studies at Rock Valley College and Rockford College. Craig married his high school sweetheart and homecoming queen Victoria Sundly in 1967. Prior to their marriage Craig enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska. It was in Anchorage that Craig and Vicki welcomed their son and only child Christopher in October of 1969. Upon return to Rockford, Craig was employed at Elco Industries, Amerock and retired from Viking Chemical in 2013 after 13 years.
Among the many ways Craig showed his kind and caring heart was through service as a 30-year member of Rockford Evening Lion's Club, serving multiple terms as president and cabinet member. He also served for several years on the board of directors for the Center for Sight & Hearing in Rockford,
Craig was a loving husband of 49 years to Vicki, "big brother" to sister Sue Sallmen and role model to son Christopher. He was a proud grandfather and would travel often to spend time at the lake with Ione and Emma or a quick trip to Madison for a soccer game or golf match.
His kind and helpful spirit will always be remembered and served as compass and mentor to many.
Craig is survived by his wife Vicki; son, Christopher (Heather); grandchildren Ione and Emma; sister Susan. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father in-law, Ben and Evelyn.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, in St. Mark Lutheran Church, 675 N. Mulford Rd. Rockford with Rev. Dr. Mark Hagen officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Memorials to Rockford Evening Lion's Club, I/C of Dyer Family or St. Mark Lutheran Church.

  2. Vicki M

Dear Vicki, Christopher , Sue and family. I grieve with you in your loss of husband, father , brother , grandfather , and friend. Craig's life was a life dedicated to God, Family, Country and a better quality of life for humanity. He was an advocate for those who had the fewest resources to help theirselves and carried out his mission in his many roles in the Rockford Evening Club and in his many leadership roles in the Lions organization. Craig was the first to greet you with a handshake, a pat on the back, a smile , a "Hello" and a twinkle in his eye. He lived a life with the athe heart, and the courage of a Lion not only during the good times but when facing adversity as well. He made a difference in the lives of many. I grieve with you the loss oh his presence on earth. I carry with me that that spirit of love and courage and faith and dedication to a better life for all.

  9. Pat and Glenn Sallberg

Between the tears and sobs we send love, hugs and prayers to you and your family and siblings. It was a delight to really get to know Craig at our reunion in Norway. His smile was the greatest asset anyone would hope to have. He had a unique sense of humor and was so much fun to be with. His habit of going to Stockholm Inn always meant he would see someone he knew, including the times we would happen to be in Rockford and there he was. A jovial guy, you couldn't help but enjoy his presence. He was devoted to our Lord and Savior and he will truly be at peace when he meets our Savior. God Bless everyone for the loving words they enter here. Vicki will be so lonely; please visit or call her and share your heart with her. Peace will come, Vicki. Meanwhile, your Lord will hold you in his arms for comfort.

Not sure is you know but Don passed away Jan 3, this year. This is not a club we choose to be part of but we will keep you in our prayers and have you join us in an outing. I will forward this obit to Tim - he can explain to Chris how horrible it is to see your father pass away. You are both in my prayers

I live in the Cloisters and my heart goes out to Sue and you, Vicki. Venita and I marveled at your gorgeous yard and on one of our walks you graciously gave us a tour. The yard is still gorgeous, but yours and Craig's warm, inviting spirit are absent. May God wrap you in peace and comfort as your life takes this new turn. I know you will hold His hand firmly and He will hold back even firmer.
