Obituary

David J. Johnson, 58, of Rockford, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2018. Born on February 19, 1960, in Rockford, the son of John and Danita (Guler) Johnson. He attended St. Paul Lutheran School and graduated from Rockford Lutheran High School, Class of 1979 where he played on the school's football and basketball team and sang bass with the choir. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. David married Joan Szwiec on October 3, 2009 in Rockford. He worked at Guler Appliance Company and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and trustee board member. David enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing volleyball with friends and family.
Survived by his wife, Joan; son, Brandon (Annie) Johnson of Winnebago, IL; granddaughter, Scarlett Johnson; daughter, Brianna Johnson of Arlington Heights, IL; parents, John (Danita) Johnson of Roscoe, IL; sister, Dawn (Douglas) Stock of Roscoe, IL; brothers, Dale (Tina) Johnson of Rockford, IL & Douglas (Janet) Johnson of Fitchburg, WI; former spouse, Barbara (Walker) Souders; and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Predeceased by his grandparents. Family gives their sincere thanks to Dr. Karbashian, the caring staff at Swedish American Cancer Center, Agrace Hospice Care, close friends, and many others who expressed their thoughts and prayers.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church - Central Site, 600 N. Horsman St., Rockford with Reverend Frank Ciprys officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

    I personally have never met David but over the last few years have gotten to know his brother Doug. And through Doug and his stories and the affection in which he spoke of all his siblings I know that David was a good man and greatly loved. My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to everyone affected by his passing. And I'll say a special prayer for the people who were closest to him.

    I was so saddened to hear of David's passing. He is now with the Lord and in a much better place. David and I were in school together for many years and were very close. We always seemed to make each other laugh and smile too! He will always be a very special friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and those close to him.
