Obituary

Thomas "Tommy" Nelson Deem II, 39, of Rockford, beloved son, brother, father, and husband passed away in his home Saturday, October 20, 2018. Born on February 7, 1979, in Chicago, the son of Thomas Deem Sr. and Kathy Rush.

Tommy was a well-known area chef, who got his start in his parents' Chicago restaurant. Tommy's dedication to his craft allowed him to work his way up the kitchen chain in many of Rockford's top restaurants. Tommy prepared dishes from the heart and expressed his creative side with unexpected combinations. He was awarded several local culinary awards including best dish in 2017 Bacon Fest. In addition to his love of food, Tommy was an avid political troll ready to debate anyone, anytime, and any side. But then again, Tommy would debate anyone, anywhere and on any topic. He loved spending time with his children and being silly with them, fishing and cheering on the Chicago teams, especially the Cubs. His charismatic nature and sense of humor will be missed by many.

Tommy is survived by his children, Valda, Kyler, De'Lanie and Thomas III; his wife Sarah Wade-Deem; father Thomas Sr.; and sister, Tammy (Andrew) Grier, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Tommy is joining his mother Kathy Deem and grandparents in the eternal.

Join family and friends as they celebrate his life from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2018 in Olson North Main Chapel, 2811 N. Main St., Rockford, IL. A sharing of stories and remembrances will begin at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Thomas Deem.

So sorry that I didn't see this until your service was over. I am going to miss you Brother.

  2. Wendy Rollin & Jerry Piasecki

We first met Tommy in October of 2017 right before Tammy & Andrew's wedding. He was smart and warm, so friendly, fun, great to talk to, handsome and passionate about his cooking craft. We each liked him right away, spoke with him, exchanging stories and life details. We are grateful we had even that brief chance to get to know this good man, Tammy's dear brother, Thomas's dear son. We are so sorry that he is gone way too soon. We wish comfort for Tammy, for Thomas and for all Tommy's family. With heartfelt sympathy, Wendy Rollin & Jerry Piasecki

I met Tommy back in 1998'. We hung out and had a blast together. Just being dumb teenagers with no clue up to no good as all teens are. I remember him being so funny and always had stories to tell. Very friendly and would argue his way through anything. He had a great heart and very loving. I lost contact with him until I found him on Facebook. We clicked like we never were apart. I'm really going to miss him. I love you Tommy. May you rest in Peace and spread your wings in Heaven.

Tommy was a great guy and a good friend. I got the honor of working with him in the kitchen and I will always hold those memories dear to my heart. He taught me a lot about myself and cooking. He often gave me the confidence to grow and do better. He also gave me the honor of putting my art on him. I was always looking forward to our tattoo sessions. I guess we'll have to finish his art on the other side. The world definitely lost a gem. Sending all my love to his family and children.
