Evelyn M. Winkler, 101, of Roscoe, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2018. Born July 23, 1917, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the daughter of Grant and Blanche (Harrison) Tye. She graduated from Rapid City High School. Evelyn married Roy D. Winkler on June 12, 1937 in Rapid City, SD.
Her life was made remarkable by her devotion not only to her own family but as a foster mother over 37 years to 823 children. Governor William Janklow of South Dakota declared a special proclamation in her honor when she retired from her service to needy children. He commended her "for opening her home and heart in lifetime labors of unusual understanding, uncommon devotion, and unbounded love to the young people of South Dakota."
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy; and her sister, Margaret. Survivors include her children, Harold Winkler of Roscoe, Fred Winkler (JoAnn) of St. Augustine, FL, and Connie (Jim) Karasek of Papillion, NE; sisters, Joyce & Carol of Rapid City, SD; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Per her request, there will be no services. Cremation rites were accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to The Salvation Army, 500 S. Rockford Ave, Rockford, IL 61104.

    Aunt Evie, you were always kind to my sister and me when we visited your house with our grandma, your sister-in-law. I remember playing with your dogs, and your foster daughter Penny.
