Print Obituary & Condolences

Roger Powell, 66, of Kirkland, Illinois, passed away from glioblastoma Thursday, June 14, 2018, at home, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters, who were wonderful caregivers, and his grandchildren, Carson and Mikalah.
Born October 19, 1951, in DeKalb, the son of Donald and Anne (Smith) Powell, Roger married Mary Taylor on May 18, 1973, at St. Catherine of Genoa Church, Genoa.
Roger was a veteran of the US Army, having served from 1970-1972 in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. He was a Cubs and Bears fan, a family man, dog lover, and a jokester-always playing pranks. Roger enjoyed playing cards and darts; he liked visiting with the neighbors and sitting on the porch.
He worked at Anaconda Wire & Cable Co. for 13 years until it shut down. He was a tool-and-die supervisor for Shake Proof (I.T.W.) in Elgin for 30 years, retiring at age 62.
A 1969 graduate of Genoa-Kingston High School, Roger played football (most valuable player) and was homecoming king. He kept his faith, despite losing everything in the tornado of April 9, 2015.
Besides Mary, his wife of 45 years, survivors include his daughters, Tiffany (Rodney) Simmons and Deena (fiancé, Tom Marston) Schell, both of Kirkland; grandchildren, Carson and Mikalah Simmons, and Haleigh and Calli Schell; brother, Randy Powell of Genoa; sister, MaryKaye (John) Cadagin of Glen Ellyn; sister-in-law, Alice Meadows; many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and -nephews; and his beloved dog, Tipper.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Terry.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Kirkland United Methodist Church, 300 W. South St., with the Rev. Jenny Weber officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 am June 30 at the church. Casual dress is requested as Roger was a blue jean and T-shirt kind of guy.
Memorials, via the family, will go to the Northern Illinois Veteran's Memorial at Franklin Township Park.
The family extends special thanks to all the hospice nurses for their wonderful care.
Arrangements are by Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Quiram Kirkland Chapel, 309 South Fifth St., Kirkland, Ill.
