Print Obituary & Condolences

Terry Burgeson, 70, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 18, 2018. Terry was born in Rockford on July 16, 1947, the eldest son of Paul and Anne (Edt) Burgeson. He graduated from Rockford College in 1969, then taught elementary grades in the Rockford Public School system, and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1974. In the early stages of his career Terry worked for Ingersoll Milling Machine Company and later for the Rock River Water Reclamation District where he retired after many years of service. He married Ellen Riley in September 1979 and became her partner in the restoration of interesting old houses and in breeding, training and showing their Arabian horses to regional and national titles.

Terry ran cross-country at East High School and Rockford College and after retiring in his 50's became a competitive marathon runner, competing in marathons throughout the Midwest and finishing the Boston Marathon twice. He was a life-long fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks and followed their ups and downs with the weary resignation of a true Chicago sports fan. But Terry loved the ‘85 Bears and was thrilled to see the Cubs win the World Series in his lifetime, and that he and Ellen were at the United Center to see the Blackhawks win the historic, triple overtime Game 1 of the 2013 Stanley Cup series.

Terry loved watching the Cubs from a seat in the left-field bleachers at Wrigley Field; competing in races and marathons with his running buddies; attending Rolling Stones concerts, Blackhawk games, and the Lyric Opera; listening to the blues, the Stones, and the Carpenters; and taking adventurous trips with Ellen hiking through the mountains of Peru to the ancient city of Machu Picchu, walking with the grizzlies on Kodiak Island, Alaska, and traveling through the western highlands of Guatemala.

Terry is survived by his wife Ellen, beloved dog Cody, and a legion of friends. He is predeceased by his parents, best friend Gregory Clark, and beloved dog Stubbs.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial gift in Terry's name to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, 765 Research Parkway, Rockford, IL 61109 or to PBS Channel 11/WTTW, 5400 N. St. Louis Ave., Chicago, IL 60625-4698.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 6th at 3:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 412 N. Church St., Rockford to celebrate Terry's life.
