ROCKFORD - John D. Gates, 83, died on April 7, 2018 at the Alden Debes Rehabilitation and Heath Care Center after a short illness.
John was born in 1934 in Chicago to John L. and Evelyn Gates.
John graduated from Cornell High School in Cornell, IL in 1952 and then attended two years at Illinois University. John married Sylvia Beishir in 1963.
John worked for the U.S. Postal System for 34 years and then enjoyed a nice long retirement of 28 years.
John loved his family. John will be remembered for his devotion to his wife Sylvia, his sense of humor, his openness, and his ability to take one day at a time.
His values are reflected in one of his favorite Bible quotes: "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches." Proverbs 22:1.
John is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Douglas) Fridsma of Bethesda, MD; twin sons, Matt Gates (Sean Martin) of Machesney Park and Mark Gates (Austin Kiyomiya) of Seattle, WA; and his granddaughter, Emily Fridsma.

John is also survived by his cousins Christine Ciocchetti, Cynthia Patterson and Jacque Kettman.
John's family extends their thanks to the staff at Heritage Woods of Rockford, Heartland Hospice, and Alden Debes for their care at the end of his life.
In accordance with his wishes, no memorial nor funeral service will be held. Cremation rites have been accorded and John's remains will be buried privately by his children at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rockford Rescue Mission, 715 W. State St., Rockford, IL 61102.
