Barbara J. Chapman, 96, of Rockford, passed away on July 1, 2017. She was born on January 31, 1921, in Rockford, the daughter of Charles and Helen (Yone) Patterson. Barbara graduated from Rockford Central High School in 1939, and married William D. Chapman on April 18, 1942. He predeceased her in March 1991. Barbara worked as a secretary and bookkeeper while raising a large family. She was active as a Daughter of the Nile, and enjoyed cooking, reading, and spending time with her family. She volunteered at the Salvation Army kitchen for many years. Barbara was very proud of her independence, and enjoyed celebrating her family's achievements.
She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Donna) Chapman of Rockton, Steven (Kathy) Chapman of Rockford, and William (Elizabeth) Chapman of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Susan Chapman (Stephen Whitelaw) of San Francisco, CA, and Darlene Chapman of Lake Wales, FL; 7 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Michael, Ryan, Brooke, Ross, Jenna, and Laura, and 8 great-grandchildren. She was blessed with many true friends. Predeceased by her brother Richard Patterson.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford, IL with Rev. Jay Quinn officiating. Private burial in Arlington Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the chapel. Memorials to Carpenters Place, 1149 Railroad Ave. Rockford, IL 61104.

    We didn't know her well, she really loved being here for thanks giving with her extended family of 30. We enjoyed having her so much. Lovely lady!!

    We will really miss Barb. She was always smiling and fun to talk to. TJ thought of her as another grandma. We enjoyed being her neighbor and being there for her whenever she needed us and she was always watching out for us too.
